The world sweeping COVID-19 pandemic is leading to delay in production as well as some new projects in the industry as many companies have temporary closed their facilities and the supply chain was interrupted. New technology developments might be affected under the challenging time as well. LEDinside shares its insights toward Micro LED technology development in such a global uncertainty and points out that it might be a chance for the next-gen display technology to move a step forward.

According to LEDinside, delays of equipment and material delivery are the major impacts of COVID-19 epidemic on Micro LED development. The R&D on manufacture process might also be affected. However, since most of production and sale activities are suspended at the moment, companies may shift their spare facilities from production to research and development to further improve Micro LED technology progresses. Display manufacturers and other end product producers may also try to search for collaboration to enhance upstream technology development.
Currently, the most challenging difficulties in Micro LED technology are still mass transfer and mass inspection/repairing. In order to overcome the bottlenecks, industry players tend to use packaging technology in short term and search for innovative technology breakthroughs at the same to for long term technology developments. Since these obstacles have yet overcome, small-sized wearable displays with less pixels or large size displays with larger pixel pitch are the current targeted applications.
To further push and strengthen Micro LED technology development, LEDinside notices that leading brands in the industry tend to build up their own supply chain while smaller companies such as OEMs mostly look for industry alliances.
